HedgeappleFruit.com - Biggest Hedgeapple Tree

The focal point of the grounds at Red Hill is the largest and oldest Osage Orange Tree in America. It has a span of ninety feet and stands fifty-four feet high.
Estimated to be 350 to 400 years old, the tree is listed in the American Forestry Hall of Fame, is a Virginia State Champion, and is a National Champion.
Named after the Osage Indians who used the wood for bows, the Osage Orange produces large, green inedible fruit, commonly called "mock oranges" or hedge apples."

Really enjoy reading this site. I put osage oranges in the corners of basement rooms and bedroom closets each on a small paper plate to keep from staining carpet and saw NO spiders and very few other crawling insects in my newly built home. Used them again when I moved to a basement apartment and again now in a 135 yr old building that I now live in and have an antique store with nooks and crannies. I feel like they repel insects and they find someplace else, hopefully outside. thanks for all the info.

I purchased 8 of them at a pumpkin patch visit with grandkids because one of the owners said they were supposed to repel spiders. We have HUGE black spiders and large brown ones. We spray inside and out all along the perimeters of the house, but they still come back. I placed them in the garage in strategic areas and a couple just outside and in the flower bed. I have seen only one spider since then and he was sitting at the edge of the garage door. We haven't seen even one of the huge, ugly black ones. The price on this site is very expensive. I got mine for 2 for $1 at the market at the pumpkin patch. I will definitely look to purchase more for the winter.
